The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (also known as FERPA) affords students certain rights concerning their student educational records. When a student reaches the age of 18 or begins attending a post-secondary institution regardless of age, FERPA transfers the rights to the student. This limits the student educational record information that may be released to third parties (including parents and guardians) without the student’s permission unless it is considered “directory information.” Wayne State University fully complies with FERPA.
For more information about FERPA, please visit the WSU Records and Registration Web site or the U.S. Department of Education website.

Scholarship Scams
Be aware of tactics companies use to convince students to utilize their services:
Federal Student Aid Information on Financial Aid Scams
Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Parents of Undergraduates
Parents of undergraduates may borrow a Federal Direct PLUS Loan to pay the educational expenses of a dependent student. This loan has a fixed interest rate of 7.9%.
See our PLUS Loan Web page for more information.
Special Circumstances
If your family has unusual circumstances such as loss of employment, divorce, separation, or death of a parent or spouse, that significantly reduces income; you may request a review of your eligibility. The Special Circumstances Appeal Form is available on our forms Web page.
Child Care Costs for Student Parents
Your dependent care costs, which are directly related to your attendance at WSU, may be added to your financial aid budget. This may increase your loan eligibility. File the Special Circumstances Appeal Form, which is available on our forms Web page.
The Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute has childcare available for children of students. See their Web site for tuition information.
