This will be an interactive program that will help students learn to better manage their finances. When you know how to manage your money, you are better prepared to successfully meet your goals and have enough money to make them a reality.  The best way to take charge of your money is to have a plan for it.  This session will provide strategies and tips regarding how to do just that!

Those who attend will be entered in a $500 scholarship drawing.

Each year this time there are many things occurring on campus in preparation for the start of the Fall semester.  We believe that students and parents of students should be knowledgeable and aware of the university's policies and deadlines as we begin a new year.  OSFA has developed a Fall 2009 Financial Aid Newsletter with information we believe are the most important to the successful start of the upcoming Fall semester. 

The newsletter contains information such as financial aid disbursement and refund information, enrollment requirements to receive financial aid, payment plan information, Fall 2009 billing due date, and a quick contact listing of key departments on campus.

As always, OSFA strongly encourages students to check the financial aid website for additional financial aid information and Pipeline for status updates regarding their financial aid file.

2009-10 Academic Year

The 2009-10 Wayne State University Undergraduate Alumni Scholarship is available to WSU graduates, undergraduates or their spouse who wish to pursue a new undergraduate degree from the University and who have been involuntarily separated from their employment within the last six months from the date of this application or have a spouse who has lost his or her job within the last six months. Returning alumnus must be pursuing a second undergraduate degree and/or spouse may be pursuing a first or second undergraduate degree.

To be eligible for the Scholarship, the applicant must:

• provide a completed, signed and dated application;
• provide signed certification from the alumnus’ previous employer or that of the spouse, indicating that the relevant person was separated from employment and the date of the separation. The certification must be on the employer’s letterhead stationery and include contact information.  We suggest that the certification come from the Human Resource Office of the former employer.
• provide proof of marital status (i.e. copy of marriage license) if spouse is the one who lost their job or is returning to school.
• not receive another tuition paying award concurrent with the WSU Undergraduate Alumni Scholarship.
• Provide notification to the Office of Student Financial Aid immediately upon receiving gainful employment 

The Scholarship award:

• will provide payment for 50% of the tuition (credit) assessment up to two undergraduate-level courses;
• does not provide payment for any fees (registration, omnibus, Fitness Center, SEVIS, late registration, course material, late payment, etc.)
• will be applied to Fall 2009 and Winter 2010 if the award recipient is a Fall 2009 admit or only to the Winter 2010 semester is the applicant is admitted for Winter 2010;
• will not pay for audited credits;
• is tuition-restricted, i.e. will be applied only to the applicable semester’s tuition assessment;
• is not restricted to Michigan residents or U.S. citizens;

• Must be a WSU alumnus;
• May have received either a bachelor's, master's, professional or doctoral degree;
• May have received their WSU degree from any previous year (e.g. 1985);
• Must be newly admitted to a Wayne State University graduate degree program (master's or doctoral) for either the Fall 2009 or Winter 2010 semester.
• Must have lost his or her job within the last six months or his/her spouse must have lost their job within the last six months;
• Must provide signed and dated certification from the former employer, on the employer's letterhead, confirming that the employee was 1) involuntarily separated from his or her job and 2) indicating the date of separation as well as contact information.
• May not receive another tuition paying award concurrent with the WSU Graduate Alumni Scholarship
• May receive the scholarship even if he or she graduated this winter or spring/summer semester and left or was separated from a part-time job that he or she held while pursuing the degree (e.g. work-study)

As stated above, the scholarship will provide payment for 50% of the tuition (credit) assessment up to two graduate-level courses.  It will not provide payment for any fees (e.g. registration, omnibus, fitness center, SEVIS, late registration, course material, late payment, etc.).  The award will be applied to Fall 2009 and Winter 2010 if the recipient is a Fall 2009 admit or only to the Winter 2010 semester if the recipient is a Winter 2010 admit.   The scholarship will not pay toward audit classes, it is tuition-restricted, and is not restricted to Michigan residents or U.S. citizens.  Payment of this scholarship will be withdrawn for dropped or failed credits/courses.
