Q. What is Wayne State University's federal school code for the FAFSA application?

A. The Wayne State University federal school code is 002329.

Q. What happens to my financial aid if I withdraw from classes?

To determine the effect on financial aid of dropping one class or more while remaining enrolled in other classes, consult the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.

If you withdraw from all classes during a semester, you may be required to repay a portion of your financial aid. The conditions under which repayment is required are stated in the Return of Title IV Policy.

The Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) strongly encourages you to discuss with a Financial Aid Administrator the effect withdrawing from all classes will have on your financial aid before you implement the change.

After officially withdrawing from all classes, you must immediately notify OSFA of your enrollment status change.

Q. Do I have to be admitted to WSU before I apply for financial aid?

No. You do not have to be admitted to the university before you apply for financial aid. Before you can receive any financial aid award, you must be admitted to a degree or certificate program. There are two exceptions: (1) prerequisite course work and (2) teacher certification.

Students with guest admission status or permit to register status are not eligible for financial aid. Students enrolled in the English Language Institute also are ineligible for financial aid.

Q. How can I update my projected graduation date?

A. To change your expected graduation date on your financial aid records, contact the Student Records Office, 5057 Woodward Ave., telephone: (313) 577-3531, e-mail: academicrecords@wayne.edu.

Q. If I take classes at another school as well as at WSU, can I receive financial aid at both schools?

A.  You cannot receive a Federal PELL Grant from two schools simultaneously. The school from which you will receive your degree should be the school from which you receive financial aid.

Q. What if I don't qualify for need-based financial aid?

A. If you are not eligible for need-based financial aid, you will be offered a non-need-based unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan provided you indicated interest in receiving loans on your FAFSA.

Q. Am I eligible to receive financial aid if I filed for bankruptcy?

A. Financial aid applicants in bankruptcy status are considered for financial aid on the basis of financial need.  Bankruptcy status is not a factor in determining financial need. However, before financial aid can be offered, you must submit to the Office of Student Financial Aid a copy of your Meeting of the Creditors letter, which your attorney or the court can provide, OR another document that shows your education loans are NOT included in the bankruptcy.

Q. How can I get a copy of my federal tax return?

A. Copies of federal tax returns can be requested from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on Form 4506, "Request for Copy or Transcript of Tax Form," which is available online at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-fill/f4506.pdf.

NOTICE: Written requests submitted on IRS Form 4506 and requests made via telephone (1-800-829-1040) should be fulfilled within 10 to 15 days. The IRS has provided an information sheet with detailed steps on how to make the request.

Q. Do all North American Indians qualify for a Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver?

A. The program is for all North American Indians who are Michigan residents for 12 consecutive months; are no less than 1/4 blood quantum as certified by the person's tribal association; and are verified by the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan, Inc.  Please access the Michigan Inter-tribal Council Web site for qualification information and an application, which can be downloaded and printed.

Q. What is verification?

A. The process by which an educational institution confirms accuracy of the data reported on an individual student's FAFSA is called verification. The FAFSA federal processor selects the applications for which the data submitted must be verified.

The federal processor applies a series of edit checks, which are prescribed by federal financial aid regulations, to each FAFSA. The edit checks cause some applications to be selected for verification. In addition, the federal processor randomly selects for verification a small percentage of all financial aid applications.

NOTICE: If your application is selected for verification, you must complete the verification process before your eligibility for financial aid can be determined, and therefore, before financial aid can be awarded to you.


Q. What must I do if your FAFSA is selected for verification?

A. If the federal processor selects your FAFSA verification, you must (1) complete and submit a verification worksheet, and (2) submit income information.

If you are a dependent student, you and one of your parents must complete a Dependent Verification Worksheet. In addition, you and your parents must submit copies of your federal income tax returns. If you and/or your parents did not and are not required to file a file federal income return, you and/or your parents, as appropriate, should check the box on the verification worksheet beside the statement indicating non-tax-filer status.

If you are an independent student, you must complete an Independent Verification Worksheet. In addition, you and your spouse, if you are married, must submit a copy of your federal income tax return(s). If you and/or your spouse did not and are not required to file a file federal income return, you and/or your spouse, as appropriate, should check the box on the verification worksheet beside the statement that indicates non-tax-filer status.

To help diminish the possibility of verification processing delays, please do the following:

  1. Submit all documents at the same time. Keep photocopies for your records. Mail the documents to:

    Note: OSFA discourages submitting verification documents via fax due to the potential for their becoming separated. Due to the potential for virus infections, OSFA does not open e-mail messages that contain attachments. Do not send documents to OSFA via e-mail.
  2. Print your name and 9-digit WSU ID number on each document that you submit to OSFA.
  3. Respond to each section of the Verification Worksheet, including Worksheets A, B, and C. If a section or part of a section does not apply to you/your parent(s)/your spouse, write “N/A” (not applicable) or “-0-,” as appropriate. Do not leave sections blank.
Q. What happens after verification is completed?

A. Verification will either confirm the accuracy of the data reported on your FAFSA or indicate differences between the data reported on your FAFSA and the tax documents/income information that you submit with your Verification Worksheet. If the accuracy of the data reported on your FAFSA is confirmed, the Office of Student Financial Aid can determine your eligibility for financial aid. OSFA will notify you of your financial aid eligibility status.

If verification indicates there are differences between the data reported on your FAFSA and the tax documents/income information that you submit with your Verification Worksheet, OSFA may make corrections to the data on your FAFSA and electronically transmit the corrected data to the federal processor. OSFA will notify you on WSU Pipeline if corrections are made to the data on your FAFSA.

You can monitor your FAFSA verification status on WSU Pipeline. The status cannot be provided via e-mail. OSFA’s e-mail is not encrypted. The security of messages transmitted via e-mail cannot be guaranteed. Messages may be intercepted, monitored, delayed, lost, or altered. Therefore, OSFA does not communicate sensitive or confidential information in e-mail messages.
