Revised Financial Aid Awards

Funds from a students financial aid award package may be reduced or canceled for the following reasons:

VERIFICATION REVIEW
Students selected for a review process known as verification are required to submit additional documentation in order to determine their financial aid eligibility.

Incoming freshman were provided a financial aid award notification prior to completing the verification review process.  Upon completing this process the Office of Student Financial Aid may determine the student's financial aid awards must be revised to reflect their correct eligibility.  This will result in a revised award email notification being sent to the student.  Incoming freshman who fail to complete the verification process will not receive the financial aid funds provided to them on their initial award notification.

Transfer and continuing students will not be offered a financial aid award notification until they complete the verification review process.  Upon completing this process the Office of Student Financial Aid may determine the student's eligibility has changed. For students pursuing an initial bachelor's degree this could result in an increase, decrease, or cancellation of their PELL Grant eligibility.

MID-SEMESTER/MID-YEAR FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA) UPDATES
Mid-semester/mid-year changes and/or updates to a student's Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) can result in a student being  selected for the verification review process.  This review can result in the student's financial aid eligibility being adjusted.  It will prevent the disbursement of future aid for that academic year until the verification review process is completed.

If the student's eligibility changes the Office of Student Financial Aid is required to make all appropriate adjustments to the student's aid package to ensure regulation compliance of federal, state, and institutional aid.

NON-ENROLLMENT/REDUCTION IN CREDIT HOURS ENROLLED
Financial aid awards are based on a student's regular, full-time enrollment at Wayne State University and contingent upon the student pursuing an eligible degree or certificate.  If you enroll less than full-time, (full-time enrollment is considered 12 credit hours for undergraduate and 8 credit hours for graduate professional students.) the disbursement of your financial aid awards are subject to proration, meaning a reduction and/or cancellation of financial aid award(s).

If a student does not enroll for a particular semester the gift aid for that semester is canceled.  All Federal loan awards are canceled.  A student will be required to complete a Loan Revision/Request form to reinstate a Stafford and/or PLUS loan should they re-enroll for any subsequent semester within the academic year.  Any refund of fees will be sent to your lender or to other federal and state aid programs.  Most financial aid awards are not transferable if you decide to attend another institution.  Contact the Michigan Department of Education at 1-888-4-GRANTS regarding the process for transferring the Michigan Competitive Scholarship and/or Michigan Merit Award to another institution.

CHANGE IN STATUS/PROGRAM OF STUDY:
Undergraduate students who complete their program of study and re-enroll with a post-bachelor status may or may not be entitled to the financial aid awards offered to them as undergraduate students.  Undergraduate students pursuing their studies with a post-bachelor status must complete an Eligible Program Exceptions Form and submit this along with a Plan of Work completed by their academic advisor to the Office of Student Financial Aid.  Their financial aid eligibility will be reviewed and their financial aid packages revised.

Graduate student who complete their program of study and re-enroll with a post-master's status are no longer eligible for Federal Stafford, Perkins, or Graduate PLUS loan funds.  Post-master's students may apply for private/alternative loan funding or enroll in a tuition payment plan offered through Wayne State University to cover their educational expenses.

MAINTAIN SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS
Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress.  The award notification sent to you is INVALID if the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards have not been met.  Students with extenuating circumstances may appeal this decision.  Please refer to the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for additional information.

ADDITIONAL AID FROM OUTSIDE SOURCES
All educational resources (such as Scholarships, Veteran's Benefits, Vocational Rehabilitation Benefits, Stipends, etc.) that are not listed on the award notification must be reported to the Office of Student Financial Aid.  Students can not receive financial aid funding above their cost of attendance.  When additional aid from outside sources are received AFTER other financial aid awards have disbursed to students it can result in the reversal of other aid leaving the student with an outstanding balance.
